Yesterday we talked about the core values of Grace Church. Our core values gives us structure, direction and purpose behind our primary mission. They also challenge us in our personal lives as well.
One of the core values is to Discover Jesus. We view this in two ways. One, we help people to Discover Jesus. We help help people understand who Jesus is and why we follow Him. Second, we need to be on a constant path of Discovering Jesus. We need to be diligently learning more about who He is.
Just like in a relationship, the more time you spend with a person, the more you discover about that person. After 8 year of marriage, and 5 years of dating previously, Allison and I are still discovering new things about each other on an almost daily basis! The same should be true as we follow Jesus. The more we follow, the more we learn….the more we discover.
The real challenge is enjoying and being excited about discovering more and more about Jesus. If like me you grew up in church, this process becomes something less than exciting at times. But, we need to enjoy this process.
This week I had a great illustration of this in our house. We have a “Dashboard Jesus” figure that’s floated around the house for years. You know the ones with the spring that bounce around?!?! My kids love this thing. Well, it’s been missing for a while in the great mess of toys. Late in the week Evan came running to me and said, “I FOUND JESUS AGAIN!!!” Of course I was laughing. But, it hit me a while later, why don’t we approach Jesus this way?
So often, like in my house, Jesus gets lost in the mess of our “toys” and stuff. Every once in a while we stumble across Jesus. The problem is we tend to categorize Jesus as just part of our stuff. But, I wanna be sure that each time I encounter Jesus I have the same excitement and attitude as my son. I wanna have honor, respect and excitement when I encounter Jesus. The thing is, it starts with seeking Jesus and desiring to encounter Him. I want to desire to discover Jesus more every day.
